How the Kimblewick Works
Like the Pelham, the Kimblewick's action is directly influenced by where the rider carries their hands — making it a highly responsive, rider-controlled bit:
- With hands in a neutral position, the rein sits high on the Dee ring for a milder, more direct snaffle-like action
- When hands are lowered before contact is taken, the rein slides approximately one inch down the Dee ring, angling the mouthpiece to approximately 45° in the mouth — creating a downward and backward pressure on the lower jaw, complemented by downward poll pressure for a powerful lowering action
- 3 rein attachment settings allow riders to fine-tune the degree of leverage, increasing or decreasing pressure to suit the horse's needs and the rider's preference
This graduated control makes the Kimblewick an excellent choice for horses that need more than a snaffle but don't require the full dual-rein setup of a Pelham.
The Barrel Mouthpiece
The Barrel joint elevates this Kimblewick beyond a conventional single-jointed design:
